Friday May 30th, 7pm, the Dikeou Collection will host a combined jazz/poetry performance featuring poets Leo Goya, Kayanne Pickens and Marcelo Games accompanied by Evan Cantor (bass guitar) and Bob Mulligan (percussion).
Leo Goya is a New York City expatriot firmly convinced that Colorado above 8,000 feet is full a'bliss and more than adequate digs. Poet, artist, percussionist, he released a CD with The Jarad Astin Jazz Trio (available on cuezonerecords.com). Leo has been trying for more than a half-century to channel e.e. cummings. (Editor's note: he succeeds often enough to make it way more than interesting!)
Kayanne Pickens-Solem is a poet, performer, artist. Raised in California's original hippie commune, the Diggers, she was exposed early to the beats and experienced first-hand the flowering of a culture we now take for granted. Studying with poets David Meltzer, Leslie Simon and Stephanie Mines at San Francisco City College, she went on to perform on the scene in North Beach and Haight Ashbury. She is currently curator of the Ward Public Library in Ward, Colorado. Her work has been anthologized in Pulse of the People, Garberville Anthology, Cost Coast, Ward Factor, and Grammatical Errors.
Marcelo Games writes poetry, novels, articles, short stories and picture books for children and big people of all shapes, sizes and places of experience. He also writes a weekly column ("Wide Angle") and edits the "Poet's Corner" for the online Nederland-based newspaper, The Ned Gazette (www.thenedgazette.com).
Drummer and percussionist Bob Mulligan's exodus from the big city scene has taken him from the hubbub of Andy Warhol's Manhattan to bucolic Longmont, Colorado. While on the scene in the Big Apple, Bob performed with a Who's-Who of artists, including Bill Laswell, David Sanborn, Jack DeJohnette, Hugh Masakela, Paul Butterfield and Maria Muldaur.
Bassist Evan Cantor is a Boulder artist and musician. Having performed folk, space-rock, megafunk and avante-garde free-jazz, he led Boulder's "unknown legends of Rock-n-Roll" in the 80s, the performance-art-avante-comedy troupe Walls of Genius. His illustration work has appeared in numerous titles, some published by Westcliffe and the Southern Rockies Ecosystem Project. His writing has been syndicated, but more often appears in The Canyon Country Zephyr, where he has been persuaded to outline his platform for the Presidency.
